How it works

Response rate is the credibility multiplier for every other metric

Response rate doesn't measure satisfaction. It measures whose voices made it into the sample. A 65% CSAT at 6% response rate is a different beast from a 65% CSAT at 32% response rate. The first is dominated by people who felt strongly enough to complain or evangelize. The second is the actual middle of the distribution.

So read your response rate first. If it's in the gutter, every downstream number is suspect.

Methodology

A one-line formula, a two-paragraph interpretation

Formula

Response rate = (Responses / Invites) × 100

Responses
Completed (not merely started) surveys.
Invites
Unique prompts sent. Don't count resends twice.
Bias note
Below ~15%, the sample tilts toward strong opinions on either end. Widen the invite pool before tightening the conclusions.

Field tips

How to lift the rate without spamming

  1. 1

Short surveys win. Response rate roughly halves with every extra minute of perceived effort.

  2. 2

Ask from a human, not a no-reply. A sender name that looks like a person beats a brand by 15 to 30%.

  3. 3

Time the ask to the event. Post purchase surveys at 2 to 24 hours, support ticket surveys within the same session as the close.

  4. 4

Close the loop before the next ask. Respondents who see their past feedback reflected back to them respond to the next survey 2 to 3× more often.

  5. 5

Don't pad the sample with reminders when the response pattern has already decided. Three reminders is courteous; seven is spam.
