Conversion Rate
3 min read
Definition
Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who complete a desired action, such as submitting a form, signing up for a newsletter, or making a purchase. It is the most direct measure of how effectively a form or page turns visitors into leads or customers.
How to Calculate
Conversion Rate = (Completions / Total Visitors) x 100
Example
Your landing page gets 2,000 visitors. 80 people complete the form. Your conversion rate is (80 / 2,000) x 100 = 4%.
Form Conversion Benchmarks
| Form Type | Typical Rate |
|---|---|
| Contact forms | 3-5% |
| Lead gen forms | 2-5% |
| E-commerce checkout | 1.5-3% |
| Newsletter signup | 1-5% |
| Survey completion | 10-30% |
| Multi-step forms | 5-15% |
How to Improve Form Conversion Rates
- Reduce fields: only ask for what you truly need.
- Use multi-step forms: break long forms into digestible steps.
- Add progress indicators: show respondents how far along they are.
- Optimize for mobile: most traffic is now mobile.
- A/B test everything: headlines, button copy, field order, layout.
- Add social proof: testimonials, trust badges, user counts.
