Response Rate
3 min read
Definition
Response rate is the percentage of people who complete a survey or form out of those who were invited or had the opportunity to respond. It is a key indicator of survey health: low response rates can introduce non-response bias and reduce the reliability of your results.
How to Calculate
Response Rate = (Responses / Invitations Sent) x 100
Example
You email a survey to 1,000 customers. 250 complete it. Response rate = (250 / 1,000) x 100 = 25%.
Benchmarks by Channel
| Channel | Typical Rate |
|---|---|
| In-app / embedded | 30-50% |
| Email (customer base) | 10-30% |
| Email (cold list) | 2-10% |
| SMS | 20-40% |
| Social media | 1-5% |
| Website popup | 3-10% |
How to Improve Response Rates
- Keep surveys short: aim for 5-10 questions. Completion drops sharply after 10.
- Personalize the invitation: use the recipient's name and reference their specific interaction.
- Send at the right time: survey immediately after the experience while it is fresh.
- Offer incentives: discount codes, prize draws, or early access.
- Optimize for mobile: most emails are opened on phones.
- Follow up: a single reminder can boost response rates by 10-15%.
