How to Create Your First Form

5 min read

Creating a form in WittyForm takes just a few minutes. Whether you need a contact form, a survey, a registration page, or something completely custom, this guide walks you through every step from start to finish.

Step 1: Open the Dashboard

After signing in to your WittyForm account, you will land on the Dashboard. This is your command center where all your forms live. If this is your first time, the dashboard will be empty with a prompt to create your first form.

Step 2: Click "New Form"

Click the New Form button in the top-right corner of the dashboard. You will be presented with three ways to create a form:

  • Start from scratch: Opens a blank canvas where you build your form field by field. Best when you have a specific layout in mind.
  • Use a template: Browse our library of pre-built templates for common use cases like feedback forms, registration forms, order forms, and more. Pick one and customize it to your needs.
  • Generate with AI: Describe what you need in plain language and our AI will generate a complete form for you. For example, type "customer satisfaction survey with rating scales" and get a ready-to-use form in seconds.

Step 3: Add and Configure Fields

Once you are in the form editor, you can start adding fields. The field panel on the left side shows all available field types organized by category.

Adding a field

  1. Click on a field type in the left panel, or drag it directly onto the canvas.
  2. The field appears on your form canvas immediately.
  3. Click on any field to select it and open its settings in the right panel.

Configuring a field

Each field has settings you can customize in the right panel:

  • Label: The question or prompt shown to respondents.
  • Placeholder: Hint text inside the input before the user types.
  • Required: Toggle to make the field mandatory.
  • Description: Optional helper text shown below the label.
  • Validation: Rules like minimum length, maximum length, or specific patterns.

Step 4: Reorder and Organize

Drag fields up or down on the canvas to reorder them. If your form is long, consider splitting it into multiple pages using the Add Page button to improve the respondent experience.

Step 5: Configure Form Settings

Click the Settings tab at the top of the editor to access form-level options:

  • Form name: An internal label to identify this form on your dashboard.
  • Thank you page: Customize what respondents see after submitting.
  • Notifications: Set up email alerts for new submissions.
  • Close date: Automatically stop accepting responses after a date.
  • Response limit: Cap the total number of submissions allowed.

Step 6: Preview Your Form

Click the Preview button in the top toolbar to see exactly what your respondents will see. Test every field, check the flow between pages, and submit a test response to make sure everything works.

Step 7: Publish and Share

When you are satisfied with your form, click Publish. Your form goes live instantly and you get a shareable link. You can also:

  • Copy the direct link to share via email, chat, or social media.
  • Embed the form on your website using the provided embed code.
  • Generate a QR code for print materials or in-person events.

Tips for a Great Form

  • Keep it short: only ask for information you truly need.
  • Use clear, conversational language in your questions.
  • Group related fields together or use pages to break up long forms.
  • Always preview and test before sharing with your audience.
  • Enable email notifications so you never miss a response.
