Quiz Leaderboards
Overview
Leaderboards add a competitive element to your quizzes by displaying a ranked list of top performers. They are perfect for trivia contests, team training, classroom competitions, and gamified assessments where motivation and engagement matter.
Enabling Leaderboards
- Open your quiz in the editor.
- Go to Settings > Leaderboard.
- Toggle on Enable Leaderboard.
- Choose a Display Name Field: select which form field to use as the respondent's name on the leaderboard (e.g., a name field or email field).
What Data Is Shown
The leaderboard displays the following information for each entry:
- Rank: The respondent's position, ordered by score from highest to lowest.
- Name: The value from the display name field you selected.
- Score: The respondent's quiz score, shown as a percentage.
- Time: If your quiz is timed, the completion time is shown as a tiebreaker for respondents with the same score.
By default, the leaderboard shows the top 50 entries. You can adjust this limit in the leaderboard settings from 10 to 100.
Public vs Private Leaderboards
You control who can see the leaderboard:
Public Leaderboard
- Visible to anyone, including respondents who have not yet taken the quiz.
- Shown on the quiz result page after submission and accessible via a shareable link.
- Great for contests and competitions where visibility drives engagement.
Private Leaderboard
- Only visible to you and your team in the WittyForm dashboard.
- Respondents see their own score and rank but cannot view the full leaderboard.
- Useful for internal assessments and training where you want scores to remain confidential.
To switch between public and private, go to Settings > Leaderboard and change the Visibility setting.
Resetting Scores
If you need to clear the leaderboard and start fresh (e.g., for a new semester or a new contest round):
- Go to Settings > Leaderboard.
- Click Reset Leaderboard.
- Confirm the action. This removes all entries from the leaderboard display but does not delete the underlying quiz responses from your data.
You can also set up automatic resets on a schedule (daily, weekly, or monthly) for recurring competitions.
Embedding the Leaderboard
You can embed the leaderboard directly on your website or blog:
- In Settings > Leaderboard, click Get Embed Code.
- Copy the provided
<iframe>snippet. - Paste it into your website's HTML where you want the leaderboard to appear.
The embedded leaderboard:
- Updates in real-time as new quiz submissions come in.
- Is responsive and adapts to the container width.
- Inherits the styling options you configure (colors, font size, number of entries shown).
Handling Duplicate Entries
By default, if a respondent takes the quiz multiple times, only their highest score is shown on the leaderboard. You can change this behavior in the leaderboard settings:
- Best Score: Only the highest score from all attempts is displayed (default).
- Latest Score: Only the most recent attempt is shown.
- All Attempts: Every attempt is listed as a separate entry.
