Quiz Scoring and Results

How Scoring Works

WittyForm automatically calculates quiz scores based on the correct answers you set for each question. When a respondent submits their quiz, their answers are compared against your answer key and a score is generated instantly.

Score Calculation

By default, scoring follows a simple formula:

  • Each question with a correct answer earns its assigned point value (default: 1 point).
  • Incorrect answers earn 0 points.
  • The final score is displayed as both a raw number (e.g., 8/10) and a percentage (e.g., 80%).

If you have assigned custom point values to individual questions, the total possible score will be the sum of all point values rather than the number of questions.

Setting a Passing Score

You can define a minimum score that respondents need to achieve to pass the quiz:

  1. Open your quiz in the editor and go to Settings > Results.
  2. Toggle on Enable Passing Score.
  3. Enter a passing threshold as a percentage (e.g., 70%). Any score at or above this value counts as a pass.

Result Pages

After a respondent submits the quiz, they see a result page. WittyForm gives you full control over what appears on this page.

Pass/Fail Messages

When a passing score is enabled, you can set different messages for each outcome:

  • Pass Message: Shown when the respondent meets or exceeds the passing score. Example: "Congratulations! You passed the assessment."
  • Fail Message: Shown when the respondent scores below the threshold. Example: "You did not pass this time. Review the material and try again."

Custom Result Messages by Score Range

For more nuanced feedback, you can create custom messages based on specific score ranges:

  1. In Settings > Results, click Add Score Range.
  2. Define a minimum and maximum percentage (e.g., 0-49%, 50-69%, 70-89%, 90-100%).
  3. Write a custom title and message for each range. For example:
    • 0-49%: "Needs Improvement": "You might want to review the study materials before trying again."
    • 50-69%: "Getting There": "You have a basic understanding but could benefit from further study."
    • 70-89%: "Good Job": "You demonstrated solid knowledge of the topic."
    • 90-100%: "Excellent!": "Outstanding performance! You have mastered this material."

Instant Feedback

For scored, trivia, and assessment quizzes, you can enable instant feedback on individual questions. When a respondent answers a flagged question, WittyForm validates the answer server-side and shows a correct/incorrect panel with your custom message before they advance. Correct answers are never exposed to the client, so respondents can't cheat by inspecting network traffic.

To enable it, open a question in the quiz builder and toggle Instant Feedback. Customize the correct-answer message (e.g., "Great job!") and the incorrect-answer message (e.g., "Not quite — keep going!").

Important: When any question in a quiz has instant feedback enabled, the Previous button is hidden from that question onward. Respondents can still navigate back on questions before the first feedback question, but once they commit to the feedback flow, they cannot go back and change answers.

Showing Correct Answers

You can choose whether respondents can see the correct answers after submitting the quiz:

  • Show Correct Answers: After submission, each question is displayed with the respondent's answer, a correct/incorrect badge, and the right answer when they got it wrong. Question-level explanations (if set) are also shown. Great for educational quizzes where learning is the goal.
  • Hide Correct Answers: Respondents only see their score and result message, not the specific answers. Use this for assessments where you want to prevent answer sharing.

To configure this, open your quiz in the builder, click the Result Screen block, and toggle Show Correct Answers in the block settings panel.

What Respondents See

After submitting a quiz, the result page can include:

  • Score: The raw score (e.g., 8/10) and percentage.
  • Pass/Fail Badge: A visual indicator if passing scores are enabled.
  • Custom Message: Your personalized feedback based on score range.
  • Answer Review: A per-question breakdown with correct/incorrect/partial badges, the respondent's answer, the right answer (for wrong questions), and explanations, when the Show Correct Answers toggle is enabled on the Result Screen block.
  • Retake Button: Optionally allow respondents to retake the quiz.

Viewing Scores in Your Dashboard

All quiz submissions and scores are recorded in your form's Responses tab. You can:

  • Sort responses by score to quickly identify top performers.
  • Filter by pass/fail status.
  • Export scores to CSV or Google Sheets for further analysis.
  • View individual response details including each answer given.
